After Shahbaz Sharif became the new prime minister of pakistan, the Pentagon has said that the US has a 'healthy military relationship' with Pakistan's armed forces. Pakistan's relations with the US, especially those under Biden's administration, have been apathetic. Relations soured further after former prime minister imran khan accused the US of plotting to overthrow his government.
The US government has vehemently denied these allegations many times.
At a tuesday press briefing in Washington, Pentagon spokesman john Kirby said the US shared interests with pakistan in terms of security and stability "in that part of the world".
According to the news, improving relations with America will be a top foreign policy priority for the new government of Pakistan. Experts believe that unlike his brother and three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz has cordial relations with the pakistan Army. The army has held power for more than half of the 75-year history of Pakistan.
However, the army had kept its distance from the power struggle between Shahbaz Sharif and imran khan in the past and said that it has nothing to do with politics. When asked about Shahbaz becoming prime minister and Imran Khan's allegations against the US, Kirby said, "I think you can understand that we will not comment on domestic politics inside Pakistan."
On Monday, hours after Shahbaz was elected prime minister, white house press secretary Jen Psaki said a democratic pakistan was important to America's interests.
