Does TN Government offer 10% EWS reservation at Universities?
Economically Backward students in TN have enrolled at the university of Alagappa that is funded by the Central Government's Department of Biotechnology, despite Higher education Minister Ponmudi's statement that the 10% EWS quota for the economically backward classes will not be allocated in tamil Nadu higher education institutions. The central government has legislated a 10% quota for economically backward sections with an annual income of up to Rs 8 lakh in education and employment.
The tamil Nadu government has not yet approved the implementation of a 10% reservation for advanced classes in the state. This central government decree, however, has been executed at Alagappa university in Karaikudi. Reservation is enforced for the economically backward and advanced sectors in education programs financed by the Central Government. The adoption of this unique reservation in Anna University's M.Tech course has already sparked debate. As a result, the course was cancelled.
The MSc Biotechnology course at Alagappa university in Karaikudi is supported by the Central Government's Department of Biotechnology. One of the ten slots in this curriculum is reserved for the economically disadvantaged advanced section. Higher education Minister Ponmudi has said that there will be no reservations for the economically disadvantaged, while an EWS student has been accepted to Alagappa university in Karaikudi.
