As if the current troubles are enough for Telangana after bifurcation, there are reports that the crucial lifeline of power in the state, Kothagudem Thermal Power Station, KTPS will have to completely closed.
The plant generates more than 800 MW each day and has been operating from early 1970s and is a key pillar of electricity generation. But the plant only has an operational lifetime of 25 years which is now being extended.
And now the environment ministry has written a letter to the government asking it to be shut down slowly in different phases by 2018. If this goes through then there is no doubt that Telangana will be plunged into darkness.
So, the government has to plan on war footing how to make alternative arrangements and save the state from horrible power crisis in future years. With the residuary AP state gaining the 24 hour power status as part of the centre’s initiative, it has to be seen how CM KCR will find a solution.
