In what is possibly a first of its kind case, a man of indian heritage has been charged with a hate crime against another man of indian descent. Tejinder Singh, 37, is accused by California's prosecutors of a hate crime, assault, and using profane words to disrupt the peace. He is not in detention, but is instead on probation and is awaiting a court date.
Indians and Americans of indian heritage have been the target of hate speech, acts of violence, and other threats. A guy who claimed to have confused computer engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla for someone from the Middle east assassinated him in Kansas in 2017. The first victim of the response to the terrorist attacks of september 11, 2001 was Balbir Singh Sodhi. He was mistaken for a person from the Middle east once more. Sikhs frequently come under attack.
However, the california event on monday may be the first time an American of indian heritage has been charged with a hate crime against someone of indian descent. Singh targeted the victim's ethnicity, religion, and country of origin. Krishnan Jayaraman, who has self-identified as Singh, is shown in a video of the incident unloading on another diner at a Taco Bell restaurant in california on Monday. Singh routinely used the N-word and called him a "filthy ass Hindu" and a "ugly ass Hindu." To insult indian Prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was killed by her Sikh bodyguards, he switched to Punjabi.
