In an interview given to indian Express, john had told that while he was having dinner in a resort in Rajasthan, he watched Aamir Khan's film Dil. In one of the scenes, Aamir picks up madhuri and then it came to John's mind that this boy looks genuine and he cannot rape. After this the same thing happened and he decided that he would do a film with Aamir which would be based on a true police officer. john also told in the interview that when he was taking opinion from his filmmaker friends on the cast of the film Sarfarosh, then people suggested the name of Shahrukh Khan. He watched both action and romantic films of Shahrukh.After this he told his friends, 'Listen... Shahrukh is a good actor but he is not fit for the role of my police officer.' However, john told that the makers tried hard to convince him and once it even came to his mind that let's take Shahrukh but then he stuck to his decision of Aamir.
