The conflict with Ilayaraja..!? Famous director's rift..!?
Ilayaraja who started his music journey in the late 70s has been enthralling his fans by giving many indian songs till now. Especially in the '80s, it was Ilayaraja's rule that no film was released without his music. To that extent, all the directors were waiting for him to compose the music. In that way, all the songs created by the collaboration of ilayaraja and k balachander were huge hits.
Their partnership which started in sindhu Bhairavi continued in many films like Punnagai Mannan, Unnaal Mudiyum Thambi, Manadhil Urudhi Vendum, and Pudhu Pudhu Arthaganal. Their friendship which was going so well ended due to a small problem. That means four films were released on diwali 1989. Rajini's Mappillai, Kamal's Vetri Vizha, Vijayakanth's Dharmam Vellum, and Sathyaraj's Vaathiyar Veetu Pillai were released. Along with these films, K Balachander's Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal was also scheduled to release.
So balachander has asked ilayaraja to finish the background score of this film. But ilayaraja denied that he has four films so he can't. This small problem caused a big rift between them. Then somehow, even though the film was released on time, balachander started booking other music composers after excluding ilayaraja from his films. In fact, there was an opinion among the directors that only ilayaraja could give good music during that period.
Balachander has the honor of breaking it. He was also the first to oppose Ilayaraja. It was only after that that other directors started wondering if they could make a film without Ilayaraja. After that music composers including AR rahman became popular in tamil cinema.
