Satyajit Ray was a legendary Film Maker and he is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. He hails from city of Kolkata and he belongs to a Bengali family. His works are considered as tex books for future film makers. Today marks his 24th death anniversary and on this day we remember him with some interesting facts.
• Satyajit Ray has directed 36 movies so far and this includes feature films, documentaries and short films.
• He was also a renowned fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic.
• His debute movie 'Pather Panchali' (1955) bagged 11 International prizes and also won the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
• Satyajit Ray has 32 National Awards and numerous International Film Festival Awards.
• Government of India honoured him with Bharat Ratna in 1992.
• He was voted the twenty-fifth greatest director of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
• He was also Member of the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1961.
• He was a huge fan of the Tintin comics and even had some shots of some of the books in his movies.
• He also became the Second Indian to win an Oscar at 1992 Academy Awards. The first was Bhanu Athaiya in 1983.
• He was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film culture.
