Operation Greens: How successful is the government's effort?

Farmers are the backbone of our economy, and it is due to their hard work that fresh fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products reach our homes. However, often farmers do not get a fair price for their hard work, the biggest reason for which is considered to be high supply of crops or market recession.

In such a situation, schemes are started by the government for farmers, so that they can sell their produce at a good price and the agriculture sector can be strengthened. One important scheme among these schemes is Operation Greens, which aims to get farmers a fair price for their produce. But has this scheme really proved effective for the farmers?

What is Operation Greens?

Operation Greens scheme was started by the government of india in 2018, so that farmers can get a fair price for their agricultural produce. Special attention was given to those agricultural products which have storage problems, such as onion, tomato, potatoetc. If these crops are not stored properly, they get spoiled quickly, causing loss to the farmers. The objective of this scheme was to provide storage facilities, cold storage, packaging and processing units to protect the farmers from such problems, so that they can store their produce and sell it later at good prices.

Another major objective of Operation Greens was to get farmers a stable price in the market, so that there is no much fluctuation in the prices of agricultural products. Under this, the Ministry of Food Processing industries allocated budget under several schemes so that farmers could get relief.
