How to Store Leather Shoes: 9 Essential Tips for Longevity
Leather shoes are a blend of comfort and elegance, and taking proper care of them is essential to preserve their quality. Here are nine best practices for storing leather shoes to extend their lifespan, as shared by Tabby Bhatia, director at Brune & Bareskin, and dhruv Arya, founder of Whitemuds:
Clean After Use: Always clean leather shoes thoroughly before storing them. Gently remove dust with a soft brush and use a leather cleaner for deeper cleaning, appropriate for your shoe’s specific type of leather.
Condition Regularly: Keep the leather moisturized by conditioning it regularly. Apply the conditioner and allow it to fully absorb into the leather to prevent it from drying out.
Allow Proper Drying: After cleaning, let your shoes dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid using hair dryers, radiators, or placing them in direct sunlight as these can damage the leather.
Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Place your shoes in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. Use breathable shoe bags or boxes to keep them protected and well-ventilated.
Use Shoe Trees: Insert shoe trees into your dress shoes to maintain their shape, absorb moisture, and reduce odors. This practice helps preserve the internal structure and prolongs the life of your shoes.
Ensure Proper Spacing: Give your shoes ample space to prevent marks, scratches, or deformations. Avoid overcrowding and ensure that each pair has enough room in your storage area.
Allow Rest Days: Avoid wearing your leather shoes daily. Give them time to air out and rest, ideally wearing them no more than three times a week to maintain their shape and extend their lifespan.
Condition and Nourish Regularly: Like our skin, leather needs nourishment. Regularly apply leather conditioners to replenish natural oils lost through cleaning and environmental exposure.
Polish and Wax: Regular polishing and waxing enhance the color and finish of your leather shoes. Use leather cream to improve color and patina, and apply quality wax for a glossy finish and added protection.
Invest in Quality: Choose well-constructed shoes with high-quality craftsmanship. Shoes with good year construction, for example, allow for outsole replacement, extending their life and ensuring long-term style and performance.
Following these practices will help maintain the appearance and durability of your leather shoes, ensuring they remain a stylish and lasting investment.
