Unscented curry leaves..? Worried Farmers..!?
In the vicinity of Mettupalayam,
curry leaves are purchased at Rs. 10 per kg. Farmers are worried as prices have fallen sharply.
In this region, about five tons of
curry leaves are harvested daily and sent to various districts of
tamil Nadu and the state of Kerala. At present, a kilo of
curry leaves sells for ten rupees a garden. The price has come down to 8 times more than in the last few months. The same
curry leaves, five months ago, cost between Rs 80 and Rs 100 a kg in the garden. At present, it is unaffordable to the farmers as it sells for 10 rupees.
According to curry traders, the price of
curry leaves usually goes up from
january to March. So prices will be high in these months.
school and
college hostels are less active in
april and May. Wedding ceremonies will also be fewer.
During this period, the price of
curry leaves will fall. Demand for
curry leaves in
kerala has declined due to continuous rains. Also, due to good rains here, the yield has increased.
The first-grade
curry leaves cost Rs. 10 per kg and the second grade Rs. 5 per kg. This price, however, is unaffordable. Some farmers are in debt.
school and
college hostels are open and running as usual. As this will increase the demand for
curry leaves, prices are likely to go up. Thus, the curry traders said.
