Is the ban on single-use plastic being implemented? The central government has asked all states and union territories to strictly enforce the plastic ban. For this, they have been asked to conduct regular inspection campaigns, especially in fruit and vegetable markets, wholesale markets, florists and factories making plastic bags. Wherever the rules are violated, the officials take action. Plastic items are confiscated and fines are imposed. Things sold as an alternative to plastic are also being monitored, such as paper plates with plastic coating, as these are also banned.
Campaigns are being run to enforce the plastic ban across India from July 2022. During these campaigns, so far 60,367 places have been inspected, a fine of Rs 19.77 crore has been imposed and 1963.6 tonnes of plastic has been seized.
Online platform to monitor plastic ban
The government has created some online platforms to properly implement the ban on single-use plastic and manage plastic waste. These platforms are: National Dashboard, CPCB Monitoring Module, CPCB Grievance Redressal App.
The National Dashboard monitors the plan made to implement the plastic ban. The CPCB Monitoring Module monitors whether the rules made to eliminate single-use plastic are being followed or not. people can register complaints related to plastic ban through the CPCB Grievance Redressal App. The government has set up control rooms to check any illegal use, sale, and distribution of SUPs. However, some outlets continue to retail these goods, and enforcement of the ban is not uniform nationally.
