In order to increase public awareness of the risks of asteroid strikes and the precautions that must be taken in the event of a near-Earth object threat, the United Nations has declared june 30 as World Asteroid Day. Even though they are smaller than planets, asteroids nonetheless orbit the sun. They are relics from the time when our solar system was forming. Asteroids come in a variety of data-sizes, ranging from 10 metres across to 530 km.History - international Asteroid Day was established by Resolution A/RES/71/90 of the UN General assembly in december 2016. The day was chosen to honour the june 30, 1908, anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid's collision with the atmosphere above Siberia. The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) authorised the Association of Space Explorers' proposal to observe the day.Importance - The goal of World Asteroid Day is to get the planet ready for an asteroid strike. Accelerating the search for asteroids is another objective for the day. Most asteroids, according to scientists, have not yet been found in orbit, and hundreds more are still waiting to be found. The international Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) uses well-defined communication techniques and procedures, according to the UN website, to assist states in analysing prospective asteroid impacts and developing mitigating measures. An inter-space agency body called the Space Mission Planning Advisory body (SMPAG) studies the technologies needed for planetary defence and seeks agreement on them.
