Why is World Consumer Rights Day observed?

World Consumer Rights Day is observed on march 15 annually as a means of raising worldwide awareness about consumer rights and needs. Governments all over the world raised awareness of consumer requirements and rights on this day. The day also seeks to raise awareness of consumer rights violations caused by market practices and what more can be done to give consumers more power.

The Consumer Protection Act of 1986, which outlines some fundamental consumer rights, was enacted by the indian government. Every year on december 24, india marks National Consumers Rights Day.

These are some of the rights that consumers have under this Act:

1. The privilege of being heard in suitable venues

2. The ability to file a complaint against unethical business practices

3. The obligation to educate consumers

4. The right to shop for goods and services at reasonable costs

History

The idea for World Consumer Rights Day originated with President john F. Kennedy. On march 15, 1962, he spoke before the US congress and explicitly brought up customer rights. The first among all world leaders to do so was him. In 1983, the first World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated. Since then, it has been celebrated all over the globe on march 15.
