Ola will be Tesla's Rival in India?
To support prime minister Narendra Modi's Make in india programme, Aggarwal says his objective is to develop an electric automobile with 90% locally produced components.
Bhavish Aggarwal's intentions to "revolutionise" the electric car market come as Tesla's plans for india remain in peril. In New Delhi, it finds no takers for its request for smaller import tax reduction. In india, EV sales are modest, but they are progressively increasing as the government encourages broad adoption through financial incentives.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, indicated in July that the firm may open a manufacturing plant in india if it succeeds with imported vehicles first. Bhavish Aggarwal, the CEO of hyundai Motor india, backed with Tesla's demand for reduced tariffs on imported electric vehicles in India. Bhavish Aggarwal stated that he was opposed to the government lowering import duties on electric automobiles. "I strongly disagree with both of these statements. Let us have faith in our capacity to manufacture locally and to entice major OEMs to develop in india rather than rely on imports."
Currently, india charges a 100% import duty on fully imported automobiles with a CIF (cost, insurance, and freight) value of around USD 40,000 and a 60% duty on those with a CIF value of less than that.
During the unveiling of the scooter, ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal remarked, "Anyone who wants to bring automobiles into india should invest in the country."
