The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on friday announced that gold jewelery will not be allowed to be sold without Hallmark Unique Identification-HUID from april 1.
Nithi Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, said that in the interest of consumers, it has been decided that after march 3, 2023, sale of hallmarked gold jewelery and gold artefacts will not be allowed without HUID.
Previously, HUID was limited to four digits.
Currently 2 HUIDs (4 and 6 digit) numbers are used.
But we are saying that after march 31, only a 6-digit number will be allowed,” Khare added.
What is HUID number in gold jewellery?

"Hallmark is a mark on gold jewelery which is affixed by an agency recognized by the Bureau of indian Standards (BIS) to ensure its fineness and purity.
So, whatever gold jewelery you buy, check the hallmark to avoid being cheated,” it says.
How can this identity be verified?
The BIS hallmark is represented by three symbols.
The BIS logo, a symbol denoting the purity and elegance of the jewellery, is then stamped with the HUID number.

“Pure” jewelry, that is, the more gold a piece of jewelry contains, the more expensive it is.
Three categories of hallmarked jewelry: 22K916 means it is 22 carat gold and the jewelry contains 91.6 percent gold.
The same 18K750 means that it is 18 karat gold and the jewelry contains 75 percent gold.
14K585 means that it is 14 karat gold and the jewelry contains 58.5 percent gold.
