To increase the sales of Dolo 650, which became popular amidst the Covid epidemic, gifts worth more than 1,000 crores were distributed to doctors by the company so that they wrote the name of this medicine only on the prescription of patients for treatment. The lawyer appearing for the petitioner in the supreme court has made this claim.

Advocate Sanjay Parikh cited the report of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). During covid everyone has taken Dolo650 as remedy to fever, Parikh stated that the makers of Dolo650 have given 1000crores worth gifts to doctors to prescribe the medicine for all the patients.

Supreme court expressed surprise

Justice Chandrachud told advocate Sanjay Parikh, "I do not like hearing what you are saying. This is the same medicine that I myself used during Covid. I was also told to use it. It's a serious matter indeed."

What is the demand in the petition filed in the court?

It has been stated on this petition that there's a want to make a Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices. Usually patients get expensive medicines as per doctors prescription for the remedy of diseases, petition stated as due to greed of expensive gifts the doctors prescribed the same medicine again and again.

The court has asked the central government to file a reply within a week on the demands placed in the petition.
