On Thursday, India's national carrier, air india, was officially handed over to Tata Group after 69 years.

N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, which controls the entire Tata conglomerate, had a meeting with prime minister Narendra Modi in delhi earlier in the day.

However, even before the new and revamped airline takes off, the company appears to have taken a number of steps to re-establish the airline's competitiveness.

Checking the staff's weight is one way to ensure that they look good. According to reports, air india intends to assess its cabin crew's body mass index (BMI), as well as their overall grooming and appearance.

"These observations must be compiled and sent to my office," said Vasudha Chandana, air India's Executive director —In-flight Services, in an order to all cabin crew members.

She stated that each cabin crew member will be observed or assessed once every three months. The order, however, drew criticism from labour unions, who called it "dehumanising."

The airline's two unions, AIEU and AICCA, had written a letter to CMD vikram Dev Dutt on Monday, resisting the order on the settings that it is dehumanising and disobeys aviation regulator DGCA rules.

The AICCA has also threatened legal action if the requirement for BMI/weight checks by grooming associates is not removed.

Among the other measures implemented by Tata management are flight announcements that refer to passengers as "Guests," as well as a recorded message from ratan tata that is played on each and every flight.
