‘Supergirl’ Will Be One of the Shortest Superhero Movies Ever — And That Could Be Its Secret Weapon

For years, superhero movies have been getting bigger, louder, and longer. Audiences have been asked to sit through sprawling two-and-a-half-hour spectacles packed with endless subplots, universe-building, and post-credit teases. Now, DC Studios is doing something few expected: hitting the brakes.

According to reports, Supergirl will clock in at just 107 minutes and 55 seconds, making it one of the shortest modern superhero films and even shorter than many entries from the old DCEU.

That runtime revelation has instantly sparked debate across the fandom. Is DC trimming the fat and delivering a tighter, more focused story? Or is the studio taking a gamble by giving fans less of a character they are eager to see more of?

The move feels deliberate. Under james Gunn’s new DC era, the emphasis appears to be shifting away from bloated runtimes and toward sharper storytelling. Rather than stretching every idea into an epic-length event, Supergirl seems poised to tell a fast-paced, emotionally driven adventure that gets in, delivers its punch, and gets out.

The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, a version of Supergirl who is far rougher around the edges than Superman. Unlike her famous cousin, Kara carries deep scars from witnessing Krypton’s destruction, giving the character a darker and more rebellious edge.

And that’s where the real intrigue lies. A shorter runtime means every scene must matter. Every emotional beat, action sequence, and character moment has to earn its place. There’s no room for filler.

If DC pulls it off, Supergirl could become proof that superhero movies don’t need to be longer to feel bigger. Sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones that know exactly when to end.
