The Park That Witnessed Two Prime Minister Assassinations 56 Years Apart

SIBY JEYYA

history is full of strange coincidences. But every so often, a sequence of events emerges that feels almost impossible to believe.

In pakistan, two prime ministers from entirely different eras met a tragic fate in the very same park—separated by 56 years. Both were rushed to the same hospital in desperate attempts to save their lives. Both efforts failed.

The coincidence becomes even more remarkable when you realize that the park and the hospital themselves became lasting memorials to the two leaders whose lives were cut short.

It's one of the most haunting chapters in Pakistan's political history.

The Two Prime Ministers

1. Liaquat ali Khan (1951)

Pakistan's first prime minister, Liaquat ali Khan, was assassinated on october 16, 1951, during a public gathering in Rawalpindi.

The location where he was shot was later renamed Liaquat Bagh in his honor, permanently linking his legacy to the site of the tragedy.

2. Benazir Bhutto (2007)

More than half a century later, pakistan witnessed another devastating political assassination.

On december 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto—the country's first female prime minister and one of its most influential political figures—was attacked after addressing supporters at the very same park.

The assassination shocked the world and triggered nationwide grief and unrest.

The Unsettling Connection

What makes the story even more extraordinary is the parallel that followed.

Both leaders were taken to Rawalpindi General Hospital in an attempt to save their lives.

Neither survived.

Years later, the hospital itself would be renamed Benazir Bhutto Hospital, creating an eerie historical symmetry:

  • The park bears the name of Liaquat ali Khan.

  • The hospital bears the name of Benazir Bhutto.

  • Both leaders were assassinated at the park.

  • Both were treated unsuccessfully at the hospital.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond the coincidence lies a sobering reminder of Pakistan's turbulent political history.

Two leaders from different generations, representing different political eras, saw their journeys end in nearly identical circumstances. The events remain deeply etched into the nation's collective memory—not only because of who they were, but because of the extraordinary parallels connecting their final moments.

Few places in modern political history carry a story as tragic, symbolic, and haunting as Liaquat Bagh.
