It’s one of those questions people are curious about but rarely get a straight answer to—how many calories does sex actually burn? The answer isn’t as dramatic as pop culture might suggest, but it’s still interesting.




On average, sex burns anywhere between 70 and 150 calories per session, depending on factors like duration, intensity, body weight, and level of activity. For men, studies suggest roughly 4–5 calories per minute, while women tend to burn slightly less, around 3–4 calories per minute. So, a typical 20–25 minute session might land somewhere near 100 calories.




But here’s the catch—it’s not exactly a replacement for your gym workout.




The calorie burn during sex is comparable to light-to-moderate physical activity, like a brisk walk. Yes, your heart rate increases, muscles engage, and there’s some level of exertion, but it doesn’t consistently reach the intensity needed for serious fat loss or cardiovascular conditioning.




That said, it’s not without benefits. Beyond calories, sex contributes to improved mood, reduced stress, better sleep, and even mild cardiovascular stimulation. It’s more of a holistic activity than a strict fitness tool.




Another factor often overlooked is variability. Not all experiences are equal—duration, effort, and even emotional engagement can influence how physically demanding it is. In some cases, it might barely register as exercise; in others, it can feel more physically engaging.




So, does it burn calories? Yes. Is it a substitute for structured exercise? Not really.
