Tamil Nadu chief minister
M.K. Stalin has written a letter to prime minister
Narendra Modi, urging the Union government to conduct a
nationwide caste-based census as part of the upcoming population enumeration exercise. Emphasizing the need for accurate and comprehensive socio-economic data, stalin stated that a caste census is essential to ensure social justice and inclusive policymaking. In his letter, the chief minister pointed out that reliable data on caste demographics would help both the Centre and the States frame effective welfare schemes and assess whether the benefits of government programs are reaching marginalized and backward communities. He stressed that the absence of updated caste-wise data poses a major challenge in addressing long-standing inequalities.Stalin highlighted that several states have repeatedly raised the demand for a caste census, as it would provide a factual basis for reservation policies, educational opportunities, and employment schemes. He noted that evidence-based governance is crucial for reducing social disparities and strengthening the constitutional principles of equality and justice. The chief minister also underlined that tamil Nadu has historically been at the forefront of social justice movements and has consistently advocated for policies that uplift disadvantaged sections of society. Conducting a caste-based census at the national level, he said, would reflect the Union Government’s commitment to transparency and equitable development. The letter comes amid growing political discourse across the country on the need for caste enumeration, with various political parties and social organizations calling for the inclusion of caste data in the national census. stalin urged the prime minister to consider the demand seriously in the larger interest of social harmony and inclusive growth.
