Ex-Home Minister and IGP Also Found Guilty!?
Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death
Bangladesh's ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been convicted of crimes against humanity.
The international Crimes Tribunal (ICT-Bangladesh) sentenced her to death after finding her guilty on all five counts.
Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ex-IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun were also convicted.
The verdict has triggered heightened tensions and tightened security across Bangladesh.
Awami League has called for a nationwide shutdown, while the interim government deployed additional troops to sensitive areas.
Prosecution’s Claims and Background
Sheikh Hasina and other accused allegedly attempted to suppress the student movement.
The prosecution claimed 1,400 people were killed during a security crackdown in July 2023.
They accused Hasina of being the mastermind behind the violence.
Hasina and her party maintain the charges are politically motivated.
The Five Charges Against Sheikh Hasina
Murder and Inhumane Acts – Accused of abetting, instigating, and participating in crimes against civilians.
Use of Lethal Force on students – Ordered elimination of protesters using helicopters, drones, and weapons.
Murder of Abu Sayeed – Accused of ordering lethal actions against students near Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.
Chankharpul Shootings – Shooting and killing six unarmed protesters under her instigation in Dhaka.
Ashulia Killings – Shooting and burning of six students, with one allegedly set on fire alive.
Sheikh Hasina’s Legal Options
Sheikh Hasina is currently in India, making surrender or arrest necessary to file an appeal.
A fugitive cannot appeal under bangladesh law while absconding.
Appeals must be filed within 30 days, and the Appellate Division must dispose of the case within 60 days.
Given the government’s firm stance, her path ahead is extremely challenging.
