"No Boys, Veg Only" - NRI Woman Blasts Indian Landlords In Canada
"Only Gujarati girls," "Punjabi-speaking vegetarian girls preferred," or "South indian girls only, no boy inquiries please" are the typical phrases. She said that she was horrified by advertisements that included things like, "Strictly vegetarian, no non-vegetarian even from outside," "We are looking for someone who speaks our mother tongue only," and "follow our religion only."
The woman accused the landlords of disregarding housing discrimination rules and questioned their motivations. "You can no longer get away with posting caste, language, and dietary restrictions in rental ads like it's normal in india," she continued. She criticized these types of ads for encouraging obvious exclusion, even while she acknowledged that she understood proprietors' desire for compatibility with tenants.
"Perhaps don't rent the apartment out if you're that particular about background, cuisine, and language? or reside with your relatives? This isn't a service that matches people. They're not asking you to marry them. As long as I abide by the terms of the lease and pay you the rent, I'm free to eat anything I want and speak any language I choose. Additionally, I do not need to be "Indian only" to rent from you. "This is incredibly irrational," she wrote.
Reactions
Social media users outside of india have differing opinions about the post. Some criticized her for focusing on "individual preferences," while others shared her views.
After living in Vancouver for a few years, I have never rented from a Desi landlord. One of them claimed that there was a lack of privacy and basic etiquette, such as asking permission and giving at least 24 hours notice before arriving.
"This is the biggest red flag for moving into an apartment," someone other wrote. As soon as you enter this house, you will essentially return to India.
However, some contended that the landlords had the authority to select tenants based on their preferences because they were the property's owners.
