The New Avengers - Is THUNDERBOLTS' Title Change Official?

G GOWTHAM
Marvel Studios started rebranding Thunderbolts* as The New Avengers today, four days after the film's theatrical premiere, with a number of posters, cast-led BTS promotional videos, and outdoor advertisements.  We now have a trailer, the first to be released under the new title, that includes additional reviewer quotes and some new footage.

Is The New Avengers the new official name for Thunderbolts*?  Not precisely.  The studio is merely removing the asterisk as a marketing gimmick; the title of the film hasn't been altered. In light of the movie debuting to $74M (rather than the expected $76M) after an estimated $18M on Sunday, -27% from Saturday's $24.5M, it appears that the marketing staff may have started the campaign a little sooner than anticipated.

Although word-of-mouth will undoubtedly play a role and Thunderbolts* garnered favorable reviews, it is unclear whether this unquestionably brilliant idea will succeed.

A unique group of antiheroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and john Walker, are assembled by Marvel Studios in Thunderbolts*.  These dejected castoffs must set out on a perilous quest that will compel them to data-face the most sinister aspects of their pasts after becoming entangled in a death trap created by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
