Indian American Muslim Body Warns PM Modi to Withdraw 'Anti-Muslim' Waqf Bill
Dr. M. Qutubuddin of the American indian Muslims Association (AIMA) wrote an open letter to prime minister Narendra Modi, expressing his profound concern over the increasing violence and divisiveness against Muslims in India. India, the group's "Janmabhoomi, Matrubhoomi, and Pavitra Bhoomi" (birthland, motherland, and sacred land), is experiencing growing communal differences, according to the letter, with Muslims subjected to everyday atrocities, discrimination, and mockery.
The group criticized the government for launching the Waqf Amendment Bill without seeking input from Muslim representatives or opposition parties, calling the action an outright assault on the Muslim community. The letter asked why Christian, Sikh, and Hindu organizations were not subject to the same restrictions as Muslim endowments. It implied that the bill was a component of a political ploy to curry favor with the majority vote bank, which was harming India's reputation abroad even as it benefited the ruling party.
The group warned about possible unrest, emphasizing that the Waqf Bill's introduction during national discontent could spark more disorder and violence. To avoid societal strife and fatalities, it encouraged the prime minister to revoke the bill. Political parties and civil society organizations have expressed worries about the ramifications of the proposed alterations to Waqf legislation, and the indian American Muslim body's plea only serves to increase the opposition to these changes.
