Mexico Threatens Google with Legal Action For Renaming Gulf of Mexico
Mexico's argument against the name change
Mexico has written to google, claiming that the US section of the continental shelf is the only area covered by US President Donald Trump's executive order on the subject, according to Sheinbaum.
"Google has no right to rename Mexico's continental shelf, nor does it have any right to rename Cuba's continental shelf, because the gulf of mexico is divided among the three countries," she said.
"Under no circumstances does mexico accept the renaming of any geographic area that includes part of its national territory and that is under its jurisdiction," she continued, stating that the document makes this point plain.
"We will wait for Google's response and, if not, we will proceed in court," the president of mexico reiterated, reinforcing their earlier warning.
Sheinbaum said her government was thinking of bringing a legal lawsuit against google on Friday, according to AFP.
Trump's Order
The conflict stems from Trump's executive order, which he issued soon after taking office on january 20, ordering US federal agencies and corporations to use the name "Gulf of America."
On january 24, 2025, the Interior Department of his government declared that the gulf of mexico was now formally known as the gulf of America.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of mexico, made fun of trump by proposing to refer to the US as "Mexican America," citing an earlier chart from before the US conquered a third of her nation in 1848.
By Trump's directive, google said in a blog post on february 10, 2025, that it was renaming the gulf of mexico to "Gulf of America" for users of their Maps app in the US.
Map users in the united states will see the "Gulf of America," while those in mexico will see the "Gulf of Mexico." The tech giant added, "Everyone else will see both names."

In a letter to Mexican Foreign minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, google, a division of Alphabet, defended its choice, stating that the name change was "consistent with our normal operating procedure to reflect on our platforms geographic names prescribed by different authoritative, government sources, including reflecting where authoritative sources may differ."
Additionally, the business stated that it would be open to having a "constructive dialogue" with Mexican authorities, maybe in person.
In response to Trump's order, apple has likewise adopted the "Gulf of America" designation for US users of its mapping program.
