On Tuesday, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni announced that she was being investigated by the courts for her nation's unexpected release of a Libyan police officer who was sought by the international Criminal Court. After being held for many days on an arrest warrant issued by the international Criminal court (ICC) for suspected crimes against humanity, Osama Elmasry Njeem, also known as Osama Almasri Njeem, was freed last week.

The ICC said it was not consulted on the decision and requested an explanation. In a social media post, Meloni stated that prosecutors accused her of embezzlement and aiding and abetting a crime related to the case.

She is not required to step down, and being the subject of an inquiry in italy does not necessarily indicate guilt or the filing of formal charges.

In a video posted on her data-facebook site, Meloni declared, "I will not be blackmailed, I will not allow myself to be intimidated, which is why I am, let's say, disliked by those who do not want italy to change and become better."

Meloni claimed that Alfredo Mantovano, the cabinet undersecretary for intelligence affairs, Justice minister Carlo Nordio, and Interior minister Matteo Piantedosi had also been placed under investigation.
