Several USA States Declare Emergency As More than 60 Million Suffer From Winter Storm
Major roads throughout almost all of Kansas, western Nebraska, and portions of Indiana were covered with snow and ice, prompting the state's National Guard to be called in to assist any stranded drivers. The National Weather service issued winter storm warnings for Kansas and Missouri, where blizzard conditions were recorded, and predicted at least 8 inches of snow, especially north of Interstate 70. New jersey was also under the alert for monday and the first part of Tuesday.
"It may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade for locations in this region that receive the highest snow totals," the meteorological agency said early on Sunday.
According to Bob Oravec of the National Weather service, 63 million people in the united states were under a winter weather advisory, watch, or warning on Sunday.
The North Pole is often encircled by the polar vortex of very cold air. When the vortex breaks free and moves south, people in the US, Europe, and Asia are hit by the extreme cold.
According to studies, the polar vortex's rising frequency of extending its icy grasp is partially caused by the Arctic's rapid warming.
Ice and snow are predicted.
Parts of US Route 41, Interstate 64, and Interstate 69 were completely buried with snow in Indiana. As plows attempted to keep up with the rate of the precipitation, Indiana State police urged drivers to avoid the highways.
"It's snowing so hard that the roads are completely covered again in half an hour after the snow plows pass through," Sgt. Todd Ringle stated.
As the storm arrives, car crashes begin.
Travel in many states, including Kansas and Missouri, could be "very difficult to impossible," according to the National Weather Service.
A few spinouts and collisions were reported by Indiana State police on Sunday.
West of Salina, a fire engine, multiple tractor-trailers, and passenger cars had toppled the day before. According to state Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner, rigs also jackknifed and plunged into ditches. In a video he uploaded, he could be seen skating on the highway blacktop with his boots. He pleaded with everyone to avoid the roadways.
Additionally, train and air travel snarled
The country's railways were severely damaged by the storms, which resulted in many cancellations. At least two cancellations were scheduled for Tuesday, forty for monday, and over 20 on Sunday.
"It's counterintuitive to try to run a full slate of services when people are being told to stay home if local authorities are telling people not to travel," stated Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak. Similarly, we are aware that our employees will struggle to get to work.
Temperatures decrease, but no records are broken.
According to experts, the eastern two-thirds of the nation will be hit by wind chills and dangerously frigid temperatures starting Monday. It may be 12 to 25 degrees (7 to 14 degrees Celsius) colder than usual.
Sunday's temperatures in Minneapolis were around zero degrees Celsius and in the teens (minus seven to ten degrees Celsius) in Chicago, while international Falls, Minnesota, which is on the Canadian data-border, had temperatures as low as eleven degrees.
