Canada's Justin Trudeau may Resign Today - REPORT

SIBY JEYYA
According to sources cited by The Globe and Mail, PM Justin Trudeau is expected to stand down as leader of the Liberal party on monday in response to mounting pressure inside the party to do so. It's uncertain if Trudeau will step down right once or continue serving as prime minister until a replacement is chosen.

This comes as surveys indicate that in the forthcoming federal election, which is scheduled for october of this year, the opposition Conservatives will handily defeat Trudeau's Liberals. Additionally, it occurs less than a month after Chrystia Freeland resigned from her positions as deputy prime minister and finance minister due to Trudeau's policies.

According to sources who spoke to The Globe and Mail, Trudeau's resignation was anticipated before of Wednesday's crucial national caucus meeting. The Liberal party was in serious jeopardy and had dropped to third place in the house of Commons for the first time when Trudeau took over as leader in 2013.

Following Trudeau's departure, there will probably be further calls for an early election to install a government capable of handling President-elect Donald Trump's administration for the ensuing four years.

According to a source who spoke to The Globe and Mail, Trudeau asked Finance minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he would be open to serving as prime minister and interim leader. However, the source stated that if LeBlanc intended to compete for the Liberal leadership, the plan might not be feasible.

The report listed Freeland, LeBlanc, former Canadian housing minister Sean Fraser, Melanie Joly, the minister of foreign affairs, Francois-Philippe Champagne, the minister of innovation, Anita Anand, the former central banker Mark Carney, and the former premier of british Columbia, Christy Clark, as potential candidates for leadership.

The Atlantic, Ontario, and Quebec caucuses have indicated that the majority of the leaders would not support Trudeau, which is additional difficulty for him. Of the 153 seats held by the Liberal party in the house of Commons, 131 are located in the three regions.

Trudeau has promised Liberal MPs that he would consider his future amid dwindling popularity figures.
