Bus fares hiked by 15%..!? Effective from january 5..!?
The karnataka state government has announced a hike in bus fares. It has been announced that this bus fare hike will come into effect from january 5. This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Siddaramaiah. Accordingly, the fares of all government buses operating under the four transport corporations in the state of karnataka will be increased by up to 15 percent. Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, minister Patil said that 23 issues, including the bus fare hike, were discussed in the cabinet meeting. He said that this is the first time since 2015 that the BMTC fares are being increased and that the bus fares of the three bus transport corporations, KSRTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC, are being increased only after 2021. He said that the cost of operating buses has increased, and the reason for the increase in expenses such as diesel price hikes and employee salaries is the reason for the increase in fares.
He reminded that the BMTC bus fares were increased only in 2015 when the price of diesel was sold at Rs 60 per liter. He said that about Rs 13 crore is spent on diesel alone every day in these four bus transport corporations. He said that the diesel expenditure, which was Rs 9 crore in 2015, has now increased to Rs 13.2 crore. The salary of employees has increased from Rs 12.95 crore to Rs 18.36 crore, Patil said. He said that we are now forced to increase the bus fare and said that the government can earn Rs 74.85 crore every month due to the increase in bus fare.
Apart from that, he said that the free bus facility for women will continue. He said that bus fares in karnataka are low compared to andhra pradesh and Telangana. Meanwhile, the opposition bjp has opposed the bus fare hike. bjp members have questioned whether they are providing free bus service to women and collecting the same fare from men.
