Manu Bhaker and D Gukesh Among Four Award-Winning Athletes Chosen For Khel Ratna Honor
On Thursday, the Ministry of youth Affairs & sports revealed the National sports Awards for 2024. manu Bhaker, D Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh, and praveen Kumar have all received the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
At 22 years of age, Bhaker made history as the first competitor from independent india to secure two medals in one Olympic Games, clinching bronze in both the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team competitions last August. In those same Games, Harmanpreet guided the indian hockey team to achieve its second bronze medal in a row.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Gukesh became the youngest World champion and played a crucial role in leading the indian team to a remarkable gold medal at the Chess Olympiad last year.
The fourth honoree is Praveen, a para high-jumper who emerged as the T64 champion during the paris Paralympics.
The T64 category is designated for athletes missing one or both legs below the knee who use a prosthetic limb for running. The award winners will be honored by the President of india at a special event at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, january 17, 2025, at 11 AM. Additionally, the sports ministry has selected 32 athletes for the arjuna Awards, which includes 17 para-athletes. The list features names such as jyothi Yarraji, Annu Rani, Nitu, Saweety, Vantika Agrawal, Salima Tete, Abhishek, Sanjay, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Preeti Pal, Jeevanji Deepthi, Ajeet Singh, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari, Dharambir, Pranav Soorma, H Hokato Sema, Simran, Navdeep, Nitesh Kumar, Thulasimathi Murugesan, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, Manisha Ramadass, Kapil Parmar, Mona Agarwal, Rubina Francis, Swapnil suresh Kusale, Sarabjot Singh, Abhay Singh, Sajan Prakash, and Aman.
