The accident in Coonoor was attributed to human error, that is, the mistake made by the air Force operating the helicopter. The report tabled in the lok sabha also mentioned many other shocking information. The indian air Force has data-faced a total of 34 accidents from 2017 to 2022. Out of which, 9 accidents occurred in the financial year 2021-2022 alone. One of them was the Mi-17 helicopter accident in Coonoor on december 8, 2021, which was caused by human error.
Earlier, various reports said that the accident was caused by the mistake of the helicopter operator. However, it is noteworthy that now, about three years later, the Defense Department's Standing Committee has confirmed that it was human error. The team investigating the accident stated in its initial investigation that, "The weather in the valley unexpectedly turned bad, and the helicopter entered the clouds, causing the accident. The clouds caused interference to the pilot." The investigation team also examined the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder of the crashed helicopter. It is noteworthy that the team examined all available evidence to determine the possible cause of the accident and found it.
General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika, and 12 security personnel with them took off from the Sulur air base in tamil Nadu's coimbatore district for the military training college in Wellington in a Mi-17 V5 helicopter. The accident took place in the Coonoor area, just minutes before landing in Wellington. General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others died on the spot in the accident. Only Group Captain varun Singh was rescued alive. However, he too died a week later without any treatment. It is noteworthy that Group Captain varun Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the highest gallantry award of the armed forces, before his death.
