Chinese investment is very important for india now..!?
Arvind Panagariya, chairman of the 16th Finance Commission of india, has said that india should adopt an open-arms approach to investments from China. After the attack on the Indo-Chinese data-border, the indian government imposed a major ban on Chinese investments. In this context, Arvind Panagariya's opinion is seen as very important. While speaking on Thursday, he said that Chinese investments are important for india and put forward many important points.
Major countries giving way to China: Panagariya made this point at the CII Global Economic Policy Summit 2024, comparing this with the approach followed by developed economies like the US and germany, and said that investments from china should be welcomed with open arms.
National interest is important: He also clarified that there should be exceptions only in certain important sectors where national interests are at stake. Panagariya also stressed the need to be cautious about investments from countries considered "unfriendly".
Why only India: While developed countries are ready to accept Chinese investments in a wide range of sectors, Panagariya noted that india should consider welcoming such investments under similar conditions.
Restrictive investment: Countries like the US and germany are already reaping huge profits from Chinese investment. Panagariya also noted that india can benefit from a similar approach. By allowing such restrictive investment, the total ban can be lifted, which will benefit the country's development to a great extent. This view of Arvind Panagariya is in line with the position of the Economic survey of india 2023-24. It is noteworthy that the survey talked about actively seeking foreign direct investment (FDI) from China. The same view was also expressed by the chairman of the 16th Finance Commission. The Economic survey stated that such investment would significantly increase local manufacturing capabilities in india and create opportunities for entry into the export market. Similarly, Panagariya also stressed the importance of india pursuing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with a large number of countries.
