After announcing a head of staff position where the chosen applicant would not receive a salary for the first year but would instead be required to give ₹20 lakh to work for him, zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal received a great deal of criticism. The 41-year-old Goyal posted the job opening on his X account, writing: “There is no salary for this role for the first year. You will have to, i
100% of this "fee," according to the founder and CEO of zomato, would be sent directly to Feeding India, the company's nonprofit division. Additionally, he explained that starting in the second year, the selected applicant would get their regular wage. He assured that this pay would be more than ₹50 LPA.
Additional qualifications for the chief of staff position included having a lot of "common sense, empathy, and not a lot of experience," in addition to having the financial means to pay ₹20 lakhs as a one-time payment. According to Deepinder Goyal, the chosen applicant would benefit from the position more than any MBA.
Backlash Online
As expected, the job posting did not receive positive feedback on social media. When the CEO of one of India's top companies demanded ₹20 lakh from a job applicant in exchange for the opportunity to work with him, many were taken aback. They pointed out that Goyal has already excluded millions of indians without extra money because of this requirement. The post, naturally, became the target of much mockery.
“As if exploiting the gig economy workers wasn’t enough, now kick the middle class parent cause food delivery company with inflated pricing wants a chief of staff,” wrote one X user named Abhishek.
“Bad idea. Please pay. 3 months into it, if you feel the person is not the right fit. He will lose a lot of money. And will gain nothing but a bitter experience,” another said.
