Recently, the price of daily necessities such as vegetable prices and grocery prices have skyrocketed due to rising inflation. Accordingly, the price of home-cooked vegetarian thali called "veg meals", has increased by 20 percent in october 2024 as compared to october 2023. Meanwhile, the price of non-vegetarian thali has gone up by 5 percent, according to the Gristle Roti Rice Rate Report. Prices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food have increased in october 2024. The price of vegetarian thali has increased by 6 percent compared to September. The price of non-vegetarian thali has increased by 4 percent. This price increase is mainly due to vegetable costs. Vegetables account for about 40% of the cost of a vegetarian diet. Vegetables account for only 22 percent of the total expenditure on non-vegetarian food.
The cost of non-vegetarian thali is less compared to vegetarian thali as the price of broiler chicken has decreased by 9%. onion and potato prices have increased significantly in FY2024. onion prices have increased by 46 percent in october this year compared to october 2023. Similarly, potato prices have increased by 51%. The report attributed the rise in prices to reduced inflows due to heavy rains in September. Also, onion prices increased by 6 percent in october compared to September. Similarly, the price of tomatoes in october 2023 was Rs 29 per kg. But in the month of october 2024, the price of one kg of tomatoes increased to Rs 64. This is about a 2-fold increase. The rise in prices is said to be due to rains in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Tomato prices have increased by 39% in october compared to september this year. The demand during the festive season is also a reason for this price hike.
The report also noted that prices will remain stable in november 2024 due to increased inflows from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. Pulses contribute 9 percent to the cost of a veg thali. The price of dal rose by 11 percent due to low stocks, low supply, and festive season demand. However, the report also predicts pulse prices to fall in december due to fresh stock arrivals. Vegetable and oil prices increased by 10% in october due to higher import duties and festive demand. On the other hand fuel prices and curry chicken prices have come down.
LPG cylinder prices in delhi fell by 11%. The price of LPG cylinders dropped from Rs 903 in september last year to Rs 803 in march this year.
The average cost of making thali at home is calculated by considering the cost of ingredients like grains, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, cooking oil, and cooking gas.
