PM Modi Inaugurates Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Phase II, Takes Rail Ride
On Monday, prime minister Narendra Modi officially launched Phase II of the Metro rail extension linking ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Modi flagged off the new route and took a ride from Sector 1 station in Gandhinagar to gift City.
Accompanied by gujarat governor acharya Devvrat and chief minister Bhupendra Patel, Modi interacted with students and other passengers during the journey. According to a government release, Phase II’s initial segment covers 21 kilometers and introduces eight new stations, enhancing transportation services between the two cities.
The expansion, developed by gujarat Metro rail Corporation (GMRC) in partnership with both state and central governments, extends the metro network to important locations including GNLU, PDEU, gift City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector-1.
The new phase from Motera to Gandhinagar’s Sector 1 will improve access to key areas like gift City, benefiting professionals, students, and tourists. The total cost of Phase II was Rs 5,384 crore, funded through loans from international agencies such as AFD and KfW.
The extension significantly shortens travel time between ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, with trips from APMC to gift City now taking less than an hour and costing Rs 35. This addition resolves a major connectivity issue between the twin cities and enhances Ahmedabad's metro network, which previously consisted of two corridors.
