In South India, especially tamil Nadu, where movie stars have made a smooth transition into influential political figures, there is a long-standing relationship between the film industry and politics. Superstar of tamil film M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) famously left the DMK due to disagreements with karunanidhi and founded the ADMK (later AIADMK). Jayalalithaa, MGR's protégé and the chief minister of tamil Nadu, continued his father's legacy, despite the DMK's persistent political opposition. A number of other well-known actors, like Sarath Kumar, Vijayakanth, and K. Bhagyaraj, have also entered politics, though their results have not been as promising.
But Vijayakanth's DMDK was able to leave an impression, especially when allied with the AIADMK. Despite his success in the movies, kamal haasan found it difficult to build momentum for Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), his political organization. The actor Vijay, also referred to as "Thalapathy," is currently the center of attention as he and his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), prepare for the general elections of 2026. Vijay is entering politics at a time when tamil Nadu's political climate is drastically shifting.
