Red alert issued - institutions and schools closed today...


Mumbai, the nation's financial hub, was brought to a complete stop by torrential rain on Monday, and it doesn't appear that the rain will let up anytime soon as the india Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "red" advisory for the maharashtra city for tuesday, July 9. The IMD has issued a red alert for these areas, therefore schools and institutions in Mumbai, thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and rural Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg would be closed on Tuesday. Both junior and senior colleges as well as elementary and secondary schools are covered by the ruling. 

About 300 mm of rain fell in six hours, ending at seven in the morning, in certain sections of Mumbai, inundating low-lying areas and highways.

Mumbai is on red alert for rain.

The IMD has issued a red signal for Mumbai, indicating that tuesday will bring heavy to extremely heavy rains to the city. According to a BMC statement, bhushan Gagarani, commissioner and administrator of the BMC, has advised people to exercise caution and stay inside their homes unless absolutely required. "All of the BMC's disaster management teams are on high alert. It said, "People are urged not to panic and can call the BMC's disaster management cell at 1916 for any help." Up till July 12, the IMD has forecasted significant rains in certain areas of Mumbai. 

Colleges and schools closed.

"On tuesday, the thane Zilla Parishad, which is in charge of rural areas, has also announced a vacation. In addition, the indian Meteorological Department's "red alert" for extremely heavy rains on tuesday will keep schools and institutions in the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg closed, an official told news agency PTI.
