In a dramatic twist reminiscent of a spicy thriller, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of india (FSSAI) has pulled the plug on 111 spice producers, leaving kitchens across the nation in a tizzy. Over the past month, these manufacturers have been given the boot, with orders to cease production immediately, The Times of india reports.
The crackdown began in april when singapore and hong kong dropped a bombshell, banning popular indian spice brands MDH Pvt. Ltd and Everest Food Products Pvt due to the presence of the carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide. As if that wasn’t enough to ruffle feathers, FSSAI's hawk-eyed inspectors swooped down on spice producers, collecting samples faster than you can say "turmeric latte."
The spice villains hail predominantly from kerala and tamil Nadu, with Gujarat, Maharashtra, and madhya pradesh also in the spotlight. The guilty parties, mostly small-scale firms, have been caught red-handed, mixing spices with unsavory adulterants like starch, sawdust, artificial colors, and chemical dyes. These shortcuts might bulk up the product and cut costs, but they also compromise the quality and safety of these beloved spices.
In response to the adulteration drama, FSSAI has upped the ante, deciding to increase permissible pesticide levels by a whopping 10 times. It's a bold move aimed at curbing further shenanigans in the spice world. Stay tuned, folks—this saga is far from over!
