Lok Sabha Elections Phase 5 Polling Today - 10 Facts

On Monday, May 20, voting for the fifth phase of the lok sabha elections 2024 will take place, encompassing 49 seats across six states and two union territories (UTs). During this round, voters in Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 lok sabha seats, will decide the electoral destiny of significant candidates from some of the state's most prominent constituencies, including Rae Bareli, Amethi, and Lucknow. Voting for the fifth phase of the lok sabha elections began at 7 a.m. and will conclude at 6 p.m.

Lok Sabha elections 2024 Phase 5: Top 10 facts


• The election commission of india announced that more than 8.95 crore voters, comprising 4.69 crore men, 4.26 crore females, and 5,409 third-gender electors, will decide the destiny of 695 candidates.
• A total of 2,000 flying squads, 2,105 static surveillance teams, 881 video surveillance teams, and 502 video-watching teams are on duty around the clock at the 94,732 voting sites.
• A total of 216 international data-border checkpoints and 565 interstate data-border checkpoints are keeping a close eye on the unlawful movement of spirits, narcotics, currency, and goods.

• The ECI has supplied 12 alternatives to voter ID cards (EPIC) for identification verification at voting locations. If a voter is on the electoral roll, they can vote by presenting any of the following papers.
• Polling will take place in 13 lok sabha seats in Maharashtra, including six in Mumbai. piyush Goyal, Bharati Pawar (Dindori), and Kapil Patil (Bhiwandi) are among the BJP's top candidates, with eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam (Mumbai North Central).

• Security has been increased in West Bengal, where there has been intermittent violence in past stages of voting. Forces have been deployed in seven seats having a history of election-related violence, with more than 57% of polling stations rated as sensitive in this phase, the highest figure so far in this lok sabha election. More than 60,000 central forces members have been deployed, as have around 30,000 state police.
 

• In Jammu and Kashmir, the first major political battle since the repeal of article 370 in 2019 will determine the fate of Omar Abdullah, the National Conference vice-president and former chief minister of the state, as well as 21 other candidates from the Baramulla lok sabha constituency.
 

• In Odisha, more than 33,000 people have been deployed to provide strict security for elections to five lok sabha and 35 assembly constituencies. In the second phase of the state's elections, over 70.69 lakh voters, including 40.33 lakh men, 39.35 lakh women, and 851 transgender people, are eligible to vote at 9,162 polling stations in the Aska, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sundargarh lok sabha constituencies, as well as 35 assembly seats within these parliamentary constituencies.
