Police issues warning following burning of caa copies...

The groups that have called for a hartal (strike) in assam to protest the divisive Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) have received a legal notice from the guwahati police. Along with announcing a statewide hartal on Tuesday, the 16-party United Opposition Forum, assam (UOFA) also gradually began implementing additional agitational programs. Four years after the law was passed by Parliament, the Center stated on monday that the caa 2019 would be put into effect. This action will offer citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. With this, the Center will now begin to award indian nationality to non-Muslim migrants from the three nations who are under persecution.

In a stern warning to the agitating parties, the guwahati police said, "Any damage to public/private property, including Railway and National Highway properties, or injury to any citizen caused by 'Sarbatmak Hartal', legal action under appropriate provisions of law, including indian Penal Code and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, will be initiated against you, and the total cost of damage to public and private properties will be recovered from you. In december 2019, there were violent protests against the legislation in assam, which led to five deaths from police action. Many indigenous groups fear that if the caa is put into effect, there will be a flood of undocumented immigrants into the state, particularly from Bangladesh.

The caution from the assam CM

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of assam, issued a warning on Sunday, stating that political parties risk having their registrations revoked if they call for bandhs (strikes) against court decisions. He remarked that because the law has already been passed, protests in the streets are pointless and that individuals who are against the caa should take their complaints to the supreme Court. "Everyone is free to demonstrate, but political parties risk having their registration revoked if they violate a court order," Sarma stated.
