Fraudsters are taking advantage of individuals in a new kind of cybercrime where they pose as law enforcement officials and place "digital house arrests" on them. In the advice, the telangana police has urged people to exercise caution and not accept or believe calls from unfamiliar numbers. The term "digital house arrest scam" describes a fraud in which competent con artists pose as representatives of law enforcement agencies, such as the police, Customs, CBI, or NIA, and inform the victim that they are the subject of an investigation for using their account, SIM card, Aadhaar card, or other cards that are connected to their bank account illegally. The naive victim is made to spend several hours cut off from friends, family, and acquaintances and is not permitted to leave the house.

The same tactic was previously observed in parcel fraud incidents that were recorded in the city, in which individuals posing as members of the police or Customs department harassed and blackmailed unsuspecting individuals, alleging that the cargo that was sent to them included illegal items.

The identification documents, including PAN cards and Aadhaar records, are being obtained by cybercriminals who then confront the victims with their data. According to a telangana State Cyber Security Bureau official, "During the phone conversation, the cyber fraudsters who pose as law enforcement officers strictly say that no one is allowed to interfere or represent the person against whom an inquiry is going on."

Fraudsters get bank account information under false pretences, trick the victim into downloading computer or mobile programmes, break into bank accounts, and transfer money. A few times, in order to resolve the lawsuit, the parties are made to pay up. If someone falls victim to one of these scams, the police have advised that they notify them.
