Just a small number of Muslim lawmakers would be in the congress come the state assembly elections in 2026, according to assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's statement on Tuesday. Sarma told reporters that just a few congress MLAs, including Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Nurul Huda, and others, will stay in the party while speaking to media outside of an event in Gohpur, Bishwanath district, according to news agency PTI.
Days had passed since the assam Cabinet decided to revoke the 1935 assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act when Sarma made his comments.
The chief minister said he was unaware of Congressman Rana Goswami's recent resignation as the party's working president and his membership of the BJP.
"He (Goswami) is a powerful leader of the congress and if he joins the BJP, I will welcome it," Sarma stated.
Sarma's opinions were earlier expressed by state Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika, who stated, "All other congress leaders and MLAs are in touch with us, except for the names I mentioned."
Bhupen Borah, the head of the assam congress, had earlier stated that Sarma's "acrimonious behaviour towards me and my family" showed that he was terrified of him.

According to PTI, Borah said that his sister-in-law and brother, who work for the government, had been sent to "two opposite corners" of the state.
The head of the assam congress said that despite his request for more protection following his attack during the Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra last month, he was not given any.
"Those who physically attacked me during the Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra are being allowed to roam free," he said.
"In a state where writing a poem of dissent, or a scathing post, can get you arrested, just imagine an assailant walking about freely, without a care in the world!" Borah contributed to X.
The head of the assam congress said that despite his request for more protection following his attack during the Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra last month, he was not given any.
