Telangana Hyderabad - Water Crisis and Govt Devises an Action Plan

SIBY JEYYA
With only 11 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) left in the Sripada yellampalli project—aside from possible leaks from the kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) barrages at Annaram and Sundilla—the telangana water problem is becoming worse very quickly.

A revanth reddy, the chief minister of telangana, has made it a priority to ensure that everyone in the state has access to clean drinking water as summer approaches. On Thursday, february 22, in the Dr. BR Ambedkar Secretariat, a meeting with senior officials from several departments resulted in the creation of an action plan in this respect.

The conversation focused on how inadequate rainfall is causing reservoir water levels to drop, raising fears about possible emergency scenarios.

No water diversion for non-essential purposes

In the course of the meeting, chief minister revanth reddy underscored the need of water conservation for drinking reasons and directed authorities to desist from using water from vital sources such as the nagarjuna sagar for non-essential uses.

To meet the impending demand for drinking water, the government also intends to write to the krishna river Management Board (KRMB) requesting authorization to extract water from the Sagar and srisailam projects.

Using the Kagna River as an example, the chief minister addressed the necessity for proactive actions and emphadata-sized the underutilized potential of diverse water resources. To satisfy the rising demand for drinking water, he asked officials to look into ways to use such resources efficiently.

GHMC drinking water supply

The hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board's summer action plan states that the Greater hyderabad area would require an additional 50 MGD (million gallons per day) on top of the current 550 MGD use. With just 319.22 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of total storage capacity available out of 517.81 TMC, the water levels in the main reservoirs across the krishna and Godavari Rivers are already dangerously low.

The Sripada Yellampally project is rapidly running out of water, which is important for hyderabad and many other regions that depend on the Mission Bhagiratha program.

Against its total storage capacity of 18.98 TMC, the project's water levels have fallen to about 11 TMC with almost one TMC decreasing per week.

To lessen the impact of any shortages, other arrangements—such as obtaining water from yellampalli and nagarjuna Sagar—are also being explored.

Recognizing the difficulties in moving water tankers, the chief minister gave police officers instructions to make sure that tankers travel freely and without hindrance, providing sufficient supply to every region within the GHMC's purview.

Concerning outstanding pay for Rural Water Supply (RWS) employees, the cm also instructed the Finance department to transfer cash right once to resolve the matter.

Reviewing and monitoring

CM revanth reddy directed the chief secretary to carry out routine reviews with district collectors to supervise implementation and track advancement, guaranteeing efficient use of existing water resources to satisfy the drinking water requirements of telangana communities.

The telangana government hopes to prevent any shortages of drinking water during the summer by putting these safeguards in place beforehand.
