Air passengers may soon experience a resolution to the delays in receiving their baggage after travel, as the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued new instructions to seven airlines. In response to reported cases of delayed baggage, airlines including air india, indigo, SpiceJet, Vistaar, air india Express Connect, and air india Express have been directed to ensure the delivery of final baggage within 30 minutes.

The directive, issued under the service Quality Requirements of the Operation, Management, and Delivery Agreement (OMDA), necessitates that airlines expedite their preparations to meet the 30-minute delivery requirement. airlines have been given until february 26 to make the necessary arrangements to adhere to this service standard.

BCAS initiated surveillance on baggage delivery across major airports in the country in january 2024. The monitoring involved tracking the duration between a flight's arrival and the commencement of baggage delivery, as well as the total time taken by airlines to deliver the last piece of baggage.

While the performance of the airlines has shown improvement, BCAS notes that it still falls short of the mandated standards. The guidelines stipulate that baggage delivery should initiate within 10 minutes of a flight's arrival, with the final piece delivered within a total time frame of 30 minutes. The ongoing monitoring by BCAS is part of its commitment to enhancing the quality of services provided to air passengers.
