Valentine's Day - Dating App Scams are on the Rise

With Valentine's Day quickly coming, a lot of individuals are utilising dating apps to locate their ideal partner in advance of the holiday. It's crucial to remember that not everyone you meet on these applications is who they seem to be. Scams on dating apps have really expanded dramatically. AI is currently being used by people to alter their photos and trick other people. In a survey conducted by cybersecurity company McAfee, more than 90% of indians reported having come across phoney accounts on dating apps.

A recent investigation examining the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques on online dating and the rise in frauds was conducted by McAfee, a business that provides online security solutions. It is what they discovered:

Seven thousand participants from seven different countries—including India—were polled for the study. It was discovered that a large number of users had encountered phoney social media accounts or dating website profiles. Approximately 98% of indians reported having come across these phoney profiles, and 39% reported having communicated with con artists posing as possible romantic partners.

The fact that some con artists are now employing AI technologies to produce believable messages and images only serves to exacerbate the issue. This makes it more difficult for those searching for love online to determine if someone is genuine or not.

It's interesting to note that a large percentage of indians surveyed admitted to using AI technologies for online dating. Approximately 65% of respondents claimed to have created images or other content for their dating accounts using AI. Furthermore, because it gives them more confidence, over half are considering sending Valentine's Day greetings to their love relationships via AI. The majority of respondents, however, stated that they would be offended to learn that a Valentine's Day greeting was truly composed by a computer.

McAfee recommends the following actions to safeguard yourself from AI and online romance scams:

-Be wary of texts from someone you haven't met in person, particularly if they appear overly general or superficial.
-Use a reverse image search to verify the authenticity of profile photos.
-Avoid sending presents or cash to someone you haven't met in person.
–Discuss your new love interest with a trusted person, and take note if they voice any reservations.
–Employ resources such as McAfee Scam Protection to identify and safeguard yourself against online frauds.
