Farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march today after talks with government fail

G GOWTHAM
Farmers will continue their 'Delhi Chalo' protest today after a critical meeting between Union ministers and farmer leaders concluded late monday night without a result.

The two parties engaged in hours of discussion but were unable to agree on any important requests. On the other hand, the administration claimed that most concerns had been resolved by consensus and that a committee had been formed to address certain remaining difficulties. The delhi Police have increased security in response to the farmers' agitation, restricting meetings and reinforcing data-borders to keep the peace.

Here are the top developments in the farmers' protest:

1.

The plan to march was made public by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher following a fruitless five-hour meeting with Union ministers. "We don't believe the government will abide by any of our requests. We believe they have no desire to comply with our requests. We may have changed our minds about our agitation if the administration had made any offers to us," Pandher added.

2. Participating in the discussions with Food and Consumer Affairs minister Piyush Goyal, Union Agriculture minister Arjun Munda expressed confidence about the discussions. Munda said that most of the issues had been resolved, and suggestions had been made to create a committee to address the ones that remained. "We are still hopeful that farmer bodies will hold talks," he stated.

3. According to reports cited by news agency PTI, the Centre consented to drop proceedings against farmers from the 2020–21 agitation, but it was unable to persuade the leaders to accept a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP). The previous demonstrations had resulted in an agreement to provide compensation to the families of farmers who had died, but this was insufficient to stop the march that was scheduled.
