The karnataka Transport Department has introduced a uniform fare system for all vehicles, including rental cars, taxis, and app-based cabs like uber and Ola. It has also been announced that the revised fares for taxi services across the state of karnataka, including Bengaluru, will be effective immediately. Under this new tariff structure, vehicles in karnataka are classified into three classes,
Accordingly, in karnataka Rs. 10 lakhs or less for vehicles: up to 4 kilometers minimum charge of Rs. 100, and an additional charge of Rs.24 will be charged for each subsequent kilometer.
For vehicles priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh in Karnataka: The minimum fare has been increased to Rs 115 and Rs 28 per kilometer.
For vehicles priced above Rs 15 lakh: The minimum fare has been raised to Rs 130 and fixed at Rs 32 per kilometer.
Why did the karnataka government fix the fare for taxis?
The order prohibits vehicle owners from charging additional fares beyond the prescribed fare structure to ensure transparency and fairness to commuters in Karnataka. Also, taxi and cab waiting charges have been revised whereby five minutes will be free and the waiting time thereafter will be fixed at Rs 1 per minute.
The new order allows ola, and uber to levy 5 percent GST and toll charges on passengers. Moreover, operators are allowed to charge extra for bookings made between 12 midnight and 6 am, with an additional 10 percent surcharge during these hours.
The implementation of the new fare structure reflects the government of Karnataka's commitment to effectively regulate the taxi industry while prioritizing the interests of passengers and service providers. This move by the karnataka government is expected to make taxi services available at low cost and improve accessibility.
