In the realm of antique auctions, where enthusiasts passionately acquire vintage treasures, a peculiar event has unfolded, eclipsing conventional expectations. A staggering sum of Rs 1.48 lakh was expended to procure a singular lemon through an auction – a seemingly exorbitant cost for a citrus fruit. This lemon possesses an extraordinary historical lineage, tracing back to the 18th century and purportedly having connections to individuals within the cabinet of that era. The lemon, now brown and measuring about 2 inches in width, carries an inscribed message dating back to 1739. The engraving reads, 'Given to Miss E Baxter, november 3rd, 1739, by Mr P Leu Franchini.' Discovered by a family in England, the lemon's unique historical provenance sparked considerable interest, prompting the family to present it to auctioneers in Shropshire, England.
Initially estimated to fetch a more modest sum ranging from 40 to 60 pounds (approximately Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 6,000 in indian currency), the lemon exceeded all expectations at the auction. In a surprising turn of events, the winning bid soared to an astonishing 1416 pounds (Rs. 1.48 lakhs in indian currency). This unexpected triumph has since been shared by David Brettel, owner of Brettel's Auctions, on their instagram account, generating widespread attention and fascination.
