Canada province puts 2-year ban on new colleges enrolling international students
According to Reuters, british Columbia intends to implement minimum language requirements at private training institutes, as well as raise criteria for labour market demands and degree quality.
According to authorities, the move aims to safeguard overseas students from being victimised by unscrupulous schools while also improving the overall quality of postsecondary education in the province. The move is also linked to the Justin Trudeau government's goal to reduce an increase in foreign student immigration, which has been blamed in part for the country's housing issue.
This news comes a week after the Canadian government set an immediate two-year ban on new foreign student visas, with the goal of reducing student intake by 35% this year to about 3,60,000. It will also suspend issuing work permits to some pupils after graduation.
According to the latest estimates, Canada's foreign student population has surpassed one million, with indians accounting for 37% of the total. However, due to the diplomatic conflict between the two nations, Canada's Immigration minister Marc Miller recently stated that the number of study permits awarded to indian students might be reduced.
To boost economic growth, canada plans to welcome 500,000 permanent residents and 900,000 overseas students by 2023. However, the inflow exceeded these restrictions, leaving the country with a deficit of 345,000 housing units, worsened by rising mortgage rates, posing considerable problems to the Turdeau government.
